Practice for Success #2: Weekend in Western Mass

August 20, 2011

The first weekend after the start of work, I went with Tifferoo to see Bon Iver at Mountain Park, a picturesque outdoor stage on a dark green hillside. The show was great and so was the light rain that seemed to correspond to each song.

(Trivia: one of the songs played is titled “Holocene,” which refers to the geological epoch that began after the last ice age. However, because of human impact on the atmosphere, we might be in a new age called the “Anthropocene.”)

While T-Roo was at her meeting, I hung out at a sweet coffee shop called Rao’s where I wished I knew the name of every song they played while I was there. A late lunch of a pastrami Reuben was had at a 24/7 diner before dropping stuff off at T-Roo’s new apartment and meeting her roommate. Late dinner after the concert was college-worthy spicy ramen purchased from the local Stop N’ Shop 15 minutes from closing.

The next day, we headed off to Sylvester’s in Northampton off of the recommendation of a Smithie, who I later found out had never been to Syl’s because she couldn’t get up early enough to beat the 2-hour long waits. We got to Syl’s around 10:30 and waited about 45 minutes to an hour. Was the wait worth it? You decide.

"The Best in the Valley"

T-Roo's caramel mocha, it had a special name

My "Almond Joy" hot chocolate which I couldn't finish

From their website:"California Benedict – Toasted Thomas’ with locally made goat cheese, fresh avocado slices, sliced tomato and spinach, topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise, served with homefries…"

From their website:"Eggs Benedict Sly’s Style – Our own whole wheat toast with slices of Canadian bacon, red onion and tomato with two poached eggs and hollandaise, served with homefries…"

The bread was really good – dark and sweet. I could have been happy with just their buttered toast and jam. Instead, we stuffed ourselves and remained in a food coma for the rest of the day.

Unabashedly luxurious

Sometimes, T-Roo does embarrassing things when she's happy, stuffed, and the recipient of free extra local goat cheese
