The Lyric Boston

January 22, 2012

A few(!) weeks ago, I went to see “Superior Donuts,” a play by Tracy Letts, at The Lyric Boston. I just did a quick Google search to see if a Wikipedia page would pop up to explain why there are Lyric Theaters and Lyric Operas in various cities around the country but nothing presented itself on the first page. I never actually made it to anything at The Lyric Opera in Chicago but I am so glad that I went to the Lyric Boston. I probably would have been glad anyways to have seen a play set in Chicago talking about Chicago neighborhoods that I know and love but The Lyric Boston was a fantastic space! It wasn’t very big – I estimate seating for 200 and there didn’t see to be a bad seat in the house.

Spiro Veloudos, Producing Artistic Director, is tall and boisterous. He came out to greet us, assured us that there would be no “TweetSeats” in The Lyric (many hisses emerged from the enthusiastic audience when the topic came up), and welcomed us very warmly to the first Wednesday night performance. Then the lights went down and the laughs began and continued for the next two hours.

Their next production is about a struggling relationship which I also want to see because I am a sucker for those plot lines. Then Avenue Q in the early summer!
